Queen of Apostles students visit autism center

June 2013

Fifth grade students at Queen of Apostles School, San Jose, visited adult participants at the Morgan Autism Center in San Jose whose mission is to help children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities maximize their potential.
Students assist adult autism participants in developing their social skills. On a monthly basis, they exchange pleasantries, introductions and personal anecdotes while creating art and playing games such as basketball and chess.
One fifth grade parent commented, “The autism participants are not the only ones who benefit. Each student gets a better understanding of what it means to be autistic and a new-found respect for people who are different from them. The students also develop a sense of compassion that they would not otherwise have without this interaction.”
