Queen of Apostles - Our History

Queen of Apostles School is an elementary school in the Diocese of San Jose. The school opened in September 1964, with three grades. Each year thereafter, another grade was added. The Kindergarten class was added in 1984, as well as an Extended Care program. Currently, there is one class per grade, Kindergarten through Grade 8. Our computer lab opened in 1985, we doubled the size of our library in 2003, and relocated and then expanded our computer lab capacity in the summer of 2010.

Queen of Apostles School was built under the direction of Father Elwood Geary, Pastor of Queen of Apostles Church. The school was staffed by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary until 1972 when a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was appointed principal. In 1976, lay administration was appointed for the school. In 1998, Sister Paula Quinlan, RSM, joined the staff as Religion Coordinator and Primary Grades Reading Specialist, but the staff has been essentially lay since 1976.

In 1985, the Marianist Community took over pastoral care and administration of the parish. Father Jim Mifsud, Pastor from 1998-2008, provided both spiritual inspiration and financial support for Queen of Apostles School. When the Marianist community left Queen of Apostles Parish, Bishop Patrick McGrath appointed Father Michael Carson as Pastor. The school and parish have been under Father Mike’s capable leadership since 2007. Father Mike was joined by Father Noel Sanvicente, as parochial vicar, and Deacon Brian McKenna. Fr. Noel was moved to another parish in the summer of 2011 and newly ordained Fr. Angelo David became the parochial vicar. The parish and school have also benefited from having a seminarian in residence from 2009-2011.

In the fall of 1999, a new community center was completed. The building contains a gymnasium, two meeting rooms, a kitchen, and bathrooms. Because of the kitchen, the school is able to provide daily hot lunch for the students. The meeting rooms are equipped with a sink and a gas line and are used for small group instruction as well as meetings. The gymnasium is used for PE, after school sports, assemblies, and social activities. The school and the parish community share the community center.

The school serves Queen of Apostles Parish, as well as twenty-nine additional parishes in the San Jose area.
